CICADA-MANIA!Olive CicadaSix (6)FliesHook Size 10Cicadas make for fantastic summer dry fly fishing when these insects are blown onto the water. There are many hundreds of species within these families and they range from dry desert regions to lush costal forests in latitudes from tropical to temperate zones. Cicadas often last surprisingly late in the season and just because you are seeing no rising fish or hearing no cicadas chirping, don’t assume they won’t eat a cicada imitation. Trout are opportunists and will be loath to let such a large chunk of fake protein drift by untouched. I’ve caught trout on cicadasas early asApril and well into November. Cicada size is often different throughout the country as different species predominate. There is no substitute for experience and the simple truth is that some rivers are always better cicada rivers than others. One thing is sure, however, there is few flies that can give you the excitement level of the Cicada. How to Fish the CicadaUse long leaders to improve your length of potential drift during each cast. You can often get away with using a heavy leader material when fishing our cicada pattern because greedy trout are notleader shy. Heavy tippet can be preferable not only for quickly landing fish but also for eliminating line twist when casting large wind-resistant flies. Always try to get a tailwind when you fish as it will assist your presentation and make your fishing day so much more pleasant. Our Cicada fly pattern is made on strong wire hooks just so you can avoid getting them straightened out when you hook large fish on heavy tippets. Many of the largest fish of the season will be caught on dry flies, so a hook straightening out on you can be a real problem with the wrong hook. I generally use one of our heavyFurled Leaders and add about 6' to 8’ of level 3X or 4X fluorocarbon tippet material. To this I attach my standard Cicada #8, but I always carry at least a few #10's and some #6's to mix things up if the fish are at all fussy and have already been deceived by this popular fly. If trout refuse the smaller ones, try a larger one and vice versa. If you are site fishing, things are a lot easier. Carefully presenttheCicada within 4-5 feet of the fish and it will, in all likelihood, get eaten. When blind fishing, simply concentrate on keeping the fly in the seams and main currents and foam lines to find the fish. The beauty of this large pattern is that fish are often attracted by the sound of it impacting the surface of the water. They will often travel a long way to inhale this great looking meal. Our Cicada improves your odds of catching fish when you must fish blind.Use our Cicada during the heat of the day in riffle water as the trout seek out the comfort of the well oxygenated stretches. Fish it blind and keep an eye out for fish at the same time, you'll be amazed how many fish will come from seemingly out of no where. If the fish are stopping short of eating the dry, try tying a small Pheasant Tail Nymph on a dropper attached to the bend of the Cicada. Another great trick is to fish a small dry such as an Adams behind the Cicada. The Cicada fly will suck the fish up off the bottom for a look but the trout has the option of a smaller dry to eat if it is uncertain about the Cicada imitation.Be patient when striking. Sometimes in slower water it is common for anglers to rip the fly from a fish’s jaws before it has a chance to be been eaten. Trout commonly take dry flies facing downstream toward the angler, so wait a second or two longer for the fish to turn before setting the hook. In faster water the fish take the fly hard so usually you don’t have the same problem. One of the beauties of the Cicada flies we make is its durability. Flies really get hammered by trout because they tend to hit cicadas so hard, but this one stands up to the abuse well.Technical Cicada BackgroundCicadas are flying, plant-sucking insects. Adult cicadas tend to have stout bodies with prominent large compound wide-set eyes situated one on each side of the head. They also have three very small glistening simple eyes on the top of the head. They have short antennae (feelers) that are quite small and bristle-like. They have two pairs of clear wings held roof-like over the abdomen. The longer fore wing covers the shorter hind wing. Male cicadas are probably best known for their loud love "songs”.They are considered harmless to people, despite the fact that their high-pitched call may annoy some people. The adults of larger kinds of cicadas can be found on the trunks or branches of trees in summer. They are often wary and fly away when approached. Smaller cicadas often live on low shrubs, or even on long grass.
