Very few flies can emulate a great number of baitfish by using one basic design when tied in three different sizes:1. Smaller Deceivers, in the two to three inch range will best resemble sand eel's, spearing (silversides), rainfish, and bay anchovies. 2. Medium sized Deceivers, in the four to six inch range, will best match peanut bunker, mullet, and immature herring. 3. Your "monster" Deceiver resembles adult bunker and blue back herring. This venerable pattern has caught fish on both coasts of the U.S. as well as in many salt and freshwater fisheries. This is not a fly just for American waters. If you fly fish in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South America or anywhere predator fish eat minnows, this is a good fly to use.The Deceiver will catch stillwater trout, western river silver salmon and Midwestern northern pike. The Lefty Deceiver, however, is best known for catching Stripers, Blue's, and False Albacore.It is a style of tying designed to resemble the shape and size of various swimming baitfish but when lifted from the water it can be cast like a missile. Any current or twitch of the line makes this fly wriggle and dance like some small baitfish. The red color in the pattern imitates gills, and predatory fish focus on the gills and eyes when they attack baitfish. I have read that a predator fish looks up and sees the white silvery underside of a bait fish and it instantly knows which way to attack by which end the gills are. If the gills are at the front, it will attack from the rear. The wing material gives the illusion of body width without a lot of extra bulk which would make it sink. The inclusion of generous amounts of flash makes the fly a more attractive and noticeable target as it glints in the sun. 3) {
